Study Overseas with top Indian Government Scholarships

Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education facilitates the process of scholarships/fellowships offered by the foreign countries under Cultural/Educational Exchange Programs. Most of the scholarships are for Research, Master’s, and Doctoral studies.

Notes:

  • Applications from the candidates, who are residing abroad, are not considered.
  • Candidates who have been abroad for study/specialization/training either on scholarship or on their own for a period exceeding six months are eligible to apply only if they have been in India for at least two consecutive years after their return from abroad on a specified date which is mentioned in the public notice for each of the scholarship/fellowship.

We have often seen that students with great merit sometimes find it difficult to afford education abroad. Hence, to give Indian students access to better education and to encourage them to study abroad Indian government has introduced several scholarship schemes. These programs cover their living expense, tuition fee, and other related charges and are accessible to students from all backgrounds irrespective of caste, religion, creed, or race. 

5 Scholarships for Studying Abroad By Indian Government

Here is the list of the most popular scholarships provided by the Indian Government to study abroad, and you can choose according to your interest.

1. National Overseas Scholarship

The National Overseas Scholarship was launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Through this scheme, the Government provides scholarships to the students who want to study overseas. This scholarship is helpful for those students who come from a low financial background.

Eligibility Criteria of National Overseas Scholarship

  • The candidate must be a permanent resident of India.
  • The maximum age to get eligible for this scholarship is 35 years.
  • The candidate must have at least 60% in qualifying exams.
  • The candidate’s family income must not be more than Rs 8 lakh.
  • Only two children from the same family are eligible for this scholarship.
  • The scholarship cannot be awarded more than one time.

  • Annual maintenance allowance
  • Tuition fees
  • Medical insurance premium
  • Poll tax
  • Contingency allowance

2. The JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship 

The JN Tata endowment loan scholarship is dedicated to Indians who want to study overseas and pursue higher education. This scholarship supports the students at the postgraduate/doctoral/postdoctoral and research level.

The JN Tata endowment loan scholarship has a simple interest of 2% per annum. This scholarship was initiated in 1892 and has offered financial support to over 5,350 students.

Eligibility Criteria of The JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship

  • The candidates must be permanent residents of India.
  • The maximum eligibility age is 45 years (30 June 2022).
  • The candidates must have completed one undergraduate degree.
  • The candidate must have at least 60% in qualifying exams.
  • The admitted candidate must be recognized as a graduate program.

Types of Assistance in Value of National Overseas Scholarship

The students who are selected for The JN Tata endowment loan scholarship will get a loan scholarship up to Rs 10 Lakh. They also get travel entitled for a “Travel grant” and a “Gift award,” while the travel grants amount RS 50,000 to RS 7, 50,000.

3. Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships

The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships are made for Indian candidates who are talented in their studies, have good work experience, and have decent education qualifications.

Eligibility Criteria of Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships

  • The candidate must have four years of bachelor’s degree or completed a master’s degree or full-time postgraduate diploma.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 55% or higher in an undergraduate degree.
  • Must have good leadership skills and community service experience.
  • The minimum IELTS score must be 6.0.

Types of Assistance in Value of Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships

  • Scholarships provide J-1 visa support.
  • Round trip of economic class in air travel from home country to the USA.
  • Funding for tuition.
  • Coverage of accidents and sickness as per US government guidelines.

4. Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Doctoral Research Fellowships

The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Doctoral Research Fellowships are designed for Indian students who are registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian Institute. These fellowships are for 6-9 months. Under these fellowships, Indian students are invited from large fields such as Computer science, public health, chemistry, bioengineering, and more.

Eligibility Criteria of Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Doctoral Research Fellowships

  • The applicant must be registered for Ph.D. at an Indian Institute.
  • The candidate should have a high level of academic and professional achievement. The candidate should have conducted research in a relevant field.
  • Employed applicants should have the employer’s endorsement.

Types of Assistance in Value of Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Doctoral Research Fellowships

  • J – 1 visa support
  • A monthly stipend
  • Coverage of accidents and sickness as per US government guidelines.
  • Round trip of economic class in air travel
  • No fees and applicable allowances on dependents.

Applications deadline 15 July 2022. 

5. Great Wall Program

The great wall program is a scholarship which is established by the Chinese Government, and UNESCO is sponsoring the students and scholars in developing countries to study and conduct research in China. This program supports general and senior scholars.

Eligibility Criteria of Great Wall Program

  • The applicant must not be a citizen of the People’s Republic of China.
  • The applicant must be in a good stage, physically and mentally both.
  • The candidate must have bachelor’s degree or must be completed a master’s degree
  • The maximum age of eligibility is 45 years.

  • Tuition fees
  • Medical insurance premium
  • Stipend
  • Accommodation
